One more RW coming up

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Oh yes, we’re surrounded by great dining here in Frederick. Frederick’s first ever Restaurant Week will be March 8 - 14. Make your reservations for the entire week quick. We are almost pretty much booked for that week. This is a great time to try some of those restaurants that you have been meaning to try. My favorite? Can’t say. I love them all for something different.

Make sure to go to the Restaurant Week site. Notice the Fork? It’s the outline of the famous Frederick Spires. Making a wild guess that it’s a Jean Peterson design. You go girlfriend! Just Love Love the logo and website design.

Weather Conspiracy

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Why is every big snow storm we’ve had this season been over the weekend? Why no snow on Mondays and Tuesdays when we’re closed? I’m calling this the big weather conspiracy of 2009/2010. If we’d had this kind of forecast last year we would have surely gone out of business. If you’re within walking distance to VOLT, get out your snow boots and head on out for a magical snow filled night.

Chevrolet VOLT@VOLT

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

The GM folks are in town this week for the DC Auto Show and decided to drive over to VOLT for dinner Saturday night. How fun to see VOLT parked outside VOLT. And Bryan had a chance to test drive the car and loved it.

Volt is an electric car that can create its own electricity. Plug it in, let it charge overnight, and it’s ready to run on a pure electric charge for up to 40 miles — gas and emissions free. After that, Volt keeps going, even if you can’t plug it in. Ha ha ha. The description of the car sounds like someone I know with the same name!

Here is us in front of the Chevy Volt. Yeah I know, thanks to my cheap camera you can’t tell what we’re standing in front of. But trust me. It’s the VOLT.

February

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

We’re almost there. My most favorite month - February. My most favorite used to be December because my birthday falls in December but nobody ever remembers my birthday since there is so much going on that month. So I’ve officially given up on December and shifted my love to February. It is Valentines after all and what girl doesn’t love getting chocolates and jewelry and kisses and maybe a little cash slipped into a new pair of Jimmy Choo’s (yeah I’m hoping my husband reads this blog). Top the night off with a little to go dinner package from VOLT’s fantastic Valentine menu and we have a night to remember and hence my most favorite month.

I understand we are fully committed for Valentines but still get on the wait list because you just never know. You don’t want to miss this dinner. As for me, I’m faxing in my to go order with the little boxes checked off on the side of each course.

Downtown also has its most popular first Saturdays Feb 6th - Fire in Ice. Enjoy frosty fun with over 30 sparkling ice sculptures located throughout downtown, a LIVE ice carving demonstration, an interactive ice playground and more. Warm up with free hot cocoa and marshmallow roasting stations as you walk the streets. This year, we’re doing a swordfish and a sailboat. My husband’s company located on Church Street agreed to host their sailboat in front of VOLT so we have a fishing/sailing theme going on. Last year, the weather was so warm that all the ice sculptures melted before the night was out. Here’s hoping to a little lower temps so we have our ice sculptures for the full weekend this time.

We are also getting new art on Feb 6th for the Feb/March period, we will be hosting Karen Starika Ward’s architectural prints in our dining room. Please join us for the opening reception on the 6th.

And a special congrats to our GM Christopher who will celebrate a full year at VOLT on the 14th!

Almost forgot. Tuesday 2/16 is also the downtown progressive dinner and VOLT is doing the dessert. Ticket sales are tax deductible and proceeds go to our Downtown Frederick Partnership. To go more info click here

With God and a Prayer

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I’m a God believing, church going kind of girl and I’ve been know to say an amen and a hallelujah when the spirits so move me, but when Pastor Paul called last week to tell me to come to church Sunday morning I couldn’t fathom why the call. I mean I’ve been good this year. But not that good. Not preach worthy good.

Glad I grabbed my Flip before running out the door.

Guess when you’re Pastor tells you to go to VOLT, you go. I have a feeling we are going to be getting a lot of FCOB members calling for reservations. Gees, Wow. Thanks Pastor Paul. And in case you were wondering, Pastor Paul has an incredible way of bringing every topic back to the Lord and this sermon had to do with hospitality and being in an uplifting place.

Speaking of God and a Prayer, I just received this email from my Frederick Rotary. If you are looking for a way to help with the devastation in Haiti please see the list below.

Here are a few organizations that are actively engaged in Haiti. All of these organizations have had some working relationship with Rotary so I believe they are trustworthy:

· Shelter Boxes – http://shelterbox.org/

· Pure Water for the World – Our club has worked with this organization in Honduras - http://purewaterfortheworld.org/

· Famine Relief Foundation – http://www.faminerelieffoundation.com

As you can imagine, this is a critical time for Haiti and I’m sure these organizations can greatly use our financial support to provide necessary services to the people of Haiti. If you would like to do more, please let me know. If nothing else, just say a prayer tonight.

VOLT Holiday Party - Baby its cold outside

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Not sure if we had the coolest company holiday party as far as holiday parties go. But we sure did have the coldest holiday party. As the press declared deep freeze for the Mid-East, Bryan and I decided this would be a fantastic time to take everyone to Ski Liberty for a tubing/snowboarding/skiing party! I think we were thinking, if you can’t fight the cold, join the cold. Next year, I opt for fighting the cold and taking everyone to Miami!

But nevertheless, I ripped up snow mountain, with my mad snowboarding tricks. Well, at least I thought I had mad snowboarding tricks until gravity took over and my ass met the hard cold icy mountain.

A big shout out thanks to bartender Benjamin for letting me hang on his leg getting off the lifts - not once but twice. Ladies, if you need snowboarding tips Ben’s your man. Although, Ben, I was cursing you all the way down on the second trip for taking me on the never ending mountain from hell. I think it took me a whole hour to make it down. Or at least it felt that way.

And I’m sure you have all seen by now Bryan’s appearance on the Bonnie Hunt show making hot chocolate. And Bryan does make the best hot chocolate in the whole world. But I have to say, the $6 for a 2 oz watery hot chocolate I bought at the lodge never tasted so good!

Some pics from the festivities.

Is this everyone? I don’t know. Everyone looks the same in a snowsuit.

Shut up and Fish

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

What can i say, I love Captain Sig and I love fish.

These pictures are far from the Deadliest Catch but check out these fish pics from my recent trip to the islands. While everyone was drinking at the bar I was excited to see the fishermen come in with their evening catch.

Look at this fishing boat - old school
fish40001.JPG

This is my fishing buddy Ambrose. Known the man for 10 years and he keeps promising to take me crawfishing with him. He says he’s worried I might drown in the sea which I’m a little worried about too. Speaking of old school, these guys actually go in and lasso the crawfish in. But you have to dive deep and lasso them from under the corral. Sounds wild. I’m going in next time.

By the way, I took this picture the same day, we had 20 inches of snow at home. Perfect timing. Not sure who shoveled my walkway but I know it wasn’t me!
